Plastering Services
Hillside Slaters can undertake plastering for all types of buildings, using traditional or modern techniques and materials as required. We can repair cornices and ceiling roses of all shapes and levels of decoration. Our skilled craftsmen will take a mould of your original plasterwork. From the mould they will create a template of wood strengthened with aluminium and, using similar plaster, will exactly match the existing work. By the time they have finished you won’t be able to tell what’s original and what’s repaired.

Line Mortar Pointing
Buildings are not the rigid constructions we think they are: they flex with the earth under them. If they are made too rigid they can crack. If the outside is too watertight, condensation cannot escape and the inside becomes damp. Traditional lime mortar is soft, allowing stone buildings to breathe and to flex. Concrete-based mortar is rigid, watertight, and harder than sandstone, which degrades due to frost damage leaving the mortar sticking out proud of the stone. Lime pointing sets more slowly that concrete but will last up to 100 years and is much healthier for your stonewalls and for you. Few builders nowadays are trained to work with lime mortar, so if you’re stone building needs attention you need to talk to us.

Rendering and Harling
Whether you want to cover up the outside of your building for cosmetic reasons or for extra protection against the elements, we can render it (giving a smooth finish) or apply harling (a textured finish), using lime-based render on stone buildings so that they can still breathe. We also repair existing render and harling as required. Contact us to discuss your plastering, line mortar pointing and rendering & harling requirements.
